E-mail warning that Greece will go bankrupt over the weekend of Easter made the Holy Week before the Christian holiday even more painful than expected for the government of George Papandreou. The first reaction of the Ministry of Finance was to deny categorically the message and designate it as the next malicious attack to the state. In the e-mail a representative of a major international financial institution reported his fears that on the peak of Easter the Greek economy will collapse. According to Imerisia newspaper the Ministry signaled to the judiciary and Interpol, which revealed that the source of the information is an agent from a large bank in London, Paul Moss.
For now, the information indicates that the banker had acted without the knowledge and approval of the institution in which he works and the e-mail was intended for a Greek friend of his - Haralambos Sarris. His profession has not yet been disclosed, but police are working on the case. The title of e-mail was something like "Here is the restructuring of the foreign debt?" and in it rumors were described for the fall of Greece, which are rampant in recent years in the City of London. The fatal words “it can happen even during the weekend” have proved crucial to the hysteria, which arose after that, and this silenced the denials of the Greek government and the leaders of the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
The presentation of the report of the Bank of Greece President calmed the markets to some extent, because some of the factors in the country have a real vision about how to develop sustainable Greek economy, the "bankruptcy e-mail" (as they call it in Greek media) muddied the waters again. The possibility of Greek bankruptcy rose almost 70%, the main indicator of the Athens Exchange collapsed and the difference between the interest rates between the 10-year Greek government bonds and the German ones exceeded 1140 points. Right now a preliminary investigation of the case is taking place by the Athens prosecutor's office and expected is full cooperation from all institutions involved in the affair.
