"Epidaurus" Festival: Aristophanes, Sophocles and Molière are expecting us

Although this year's "Epidaurus" festival is dedicated to Aristophanes, the official opening will take place with a work of Sophocles, namely "Oedipus Rex" directed by Cezaris Grauzinis from Lithuania and an all-male composition of the troupe.

Fortunately this year Epidaurus remains the strong tradition in the Greek theatre life. Indeed, one Friday or Saturday night in the ancient Greek theatre at Epidaurus, is a unique experience.

On 6 and 7 July theatre lovers will be able to enjoy the play "Oedipus Rex" translated by Minos Volanakis, with Emilios Chilakis and Constantine Markoulakis in the leading roles, and with the participation of Christos Sapuntzis, Kostas Koronaios, Alberto Fais, Giannis Tsemberlidis , Kostas Siradakis, Panagiotis Exarcheas, Onik Ketsogian, Giorgos Papandreou and Jef Maarawi.

This will be followed by the comedy of Aristophanes 'The Clouds', presented by the National Theatre and Nikos Mastorakis, translated by K. C. Myris (poetic pseudonym of Costas Georgosopoulos). Giannis Bezos plays Strepsiades and Makis Papadimitriou plays the role of his son Pheldippides. Also starring: Alexandros Mylonas, Yiannis Dalianis, Nikos Psarras, Promitheas Aleiferopulos and the roles of the disciples are performed by Laertes Malkotsis, Omiros Poulakis, Thanos Tokakis, Michalis Oikonomou, Tanya Tucker and others.

 

The festival will continue with the second comedy of Aristophanes this year “The Knights”, translated and directed by Stamatis Fasoulis. The decor is the work of Manolis Pandelidakis and costumes are by Deni Vachlioti. Starring Petros Filippidis and Yannis Zouganelis. Also starring are: Takis Papamatthaiou, Pygmalion Dadakaridis, Yiannis Samsiaris, Giorgos Papageorgiou and others. The State Theatre of Northern Greece and the Theatre “Acropolis” produce the show jointly.

"Neos Kosmos" theatre stages another comedy by Aristophanes - “Ecclesiazusae” (Assembly Women), directed by Vaggelis Theodoropoulos, adaptation of the text and music by Vasilis Mavrogeorgiou and Thanos Mikroutsikos. Daphne Lambrogianni plays the role of Praxagora, the role of Blepyrus is performed by Kostas Koklas, the young man is Giorgos Pyrpasopulos and Chremes is performed by Pandelis Dendakis. Also starring are Nikos Kardonis, Stratos Christou, Georgia Georgoni, Mary Sausopoulou, Dini Rendy and others.

In August, the atmosphere will change with the help of "Amphitryon" by Molière, translated by Chrysa Prokopaki and directed by Leftheris Voyiadzis. The decor is the work of Eva Manidaki, costumes are by Ioanna Tsami, Music - Dimitris Kamarotos, lighting - Leftheris Pavlopoulos. Cast: Amalia Moutousi, Giorgios Galos, Nikos Kouris, Dimitris Imelos, Christos Loulis, Eva Saoulidou, Stefania Goulioti, Konstantinos Avarikiotis, Konstantinos Aspiotis, Konstantinos Giannakopoulos, Andreas Constantinou, Charis Frangoulis, Nikolaos Chanakoulias.

 

This year's "Epidaurus" festival will end with another comedy by Aristophanes - "The Birds", which is a production of the Crete theatre, directed by Giannis Kakleas, music by Manos Hadjidakis, and set design by Manolis Pandelidakis. Cast: Vassilis Haralambopoulos, Odysseus Papaspiliopoulos, Kostas Berikopoulos, Giorgos Chrysostomou, Agoritsa Oikonomou, Vaggelis Hadjinikolaou, Agapi Manoura, Sokratis Patsikas, Sofia Michail, Prokopis Agatokleous, Ivan Svitailo, Mara Vlachaki, Alain Rivero.
