Theoretically, the weakest team in the group of the Greek national team for Euro 2012 Qualifying, Malta managed to startle the players of the Greek team in both matches played between them.
In Valletta the goal of Vassilis Torosidis came almost at the last second of the match and managed to save Fernando Santos and his players. On Karaiskakis Stadium in front of Greek fans, things were relatively easier. However, for few minutes the Maltese managed to accelerate the pulse of the Greek fans.
The match had started perfectly for the Greeks, with a series of missed opportunities and two goals in the first half. However the sure victory became doubted when the guests reduced the difference in the first minutes of the overtime. Fortunately the third goal of the Greek team did not come too late, giving the victory, but "shoving under the carpet" a lot of the shortcomings in the game of the Greek national team.
Except for the return of the Greek national team in the top of the sixth qualifying group, (with 14 points against the 13 of Israel and Croatia), the other positive thing in the whole match was the fact that the young talents of the Greek football finally screamed out - "here we are."
Yannis Fetfatzidis send the ball in the net twice, while during his debut in the men's national team Kyriakos Papadopoulos was named top scorer and proved once again that the Bundesliga has quickly made him more "mature."
Olympiakos striker opened the score as early as the 8th minute, after a great combination of Ninis and Katsouranis, by assistance of the latter. And in the 26th minute after a foul of Karagounis, Papadopoulos scored and made the 2:0.
Nine minutes into the second half, Mifsud benefited from the childish error in central defense of Greece and with a pass won over the relatively unstable Dimitris Konstantopoulos for whom this was a first appearance with the national team of Greece. 8 minutes later, again Fetfatzidis was at the right place at the right time and with a close pass ensured the three points for Greece.

In the other match of the Greek group, as a guest Israel won against Latvia (2-1).
