The next few days are expected to be quite "hot" for the agricultural sector in Greece, since from Monday many protests will begin, organized by the Panhellenic Association of Agricultural Unions (PASI). The protests will end with a rally in Thessaloniki on February 4.
Farmers are protesting against the increasing of the amount of insurance instalments that they pay to the Greek Agricultural Insurance Organisation (ELGA). They also want ELGA to become a state institution with sufficient funding, which will compensate 100 percent for any damage to their crops caused by natural disasters or diseases.
In particular, on Monday protests will take place outside the offices of ELGA throughout the country.
On Wednesday, 25 January, protests are planned in the branches of the National Electricity Company (DEI) in all cities as a joint initiative of the PanHellenic Association of Agricultural Unions (PASI), the Communist labour movement (PAME), the PanHellenic antitrust movement (PASEVE), the Front for fight by the students (MAS) and the Federation of Women in Greece (OGE) .
Many protests are planned also for the 27 January in the regional centres of the Agricultural Insurance Organization (OGA) and in branches of the Agricultural Bank.
Two days later, on Sunday, 29 January, a protest will be held also in Malgara and Leptokaria.
According to the provided schedule, the peak of the protests will be a rally, which will be held on 4 February, in Thessaloniki, and a protest march to the International Exhibition City Centre HELEXPO, where at that time (from 1-5 February) there will be the 24th International exhibition of agricultural machinery, equipment and supplies Agrotica.
