It is summer. It is time to relax and entertain. Every woman is willing to change her look and have a new hairstyle or a nice manicure. During our vacation, we want our hair to look good but with little effort. We should take special care of it in the summer. GRReporter asked the famous hairdresser George Doukas for advice. He manages a modern hairdresser’s studio in the centre of Athens and participates with his work in many commercials, videos and performances.
What are the fashionable hairstyles and colours for the summer of 2011?
Short hair has become very fashionable. After 2010 when the box hairstyle was fashionable, great stylists offered shorter lengths. Red and copper shades gained ground as colours. Personally, I do not recommend red and copper shades for summer, but all fashion magazines and the models on the catwalks presenting the proposals of all the major designers are with red and copper shades of hair. This season’s ''hot'' hairstyle is the very short hair, with almost shaved sides and solid and long bangs. They could be on one side or have an asymmetric shape in strong colours like red and fiery copper shades. So, the shorter the hair, the more fashionable it is in the summer of 2011.
Would you give some tips to help protect the hair from the disastrous consequences of the summer?
It would be better to nourish deeply the hair in advance. Wash it with normal water after sunbathing, not necessarily with shampoo. It is necessary to use nourishing balm or mask. For example, wash your hair thoroughly with water, put a nourishing mask and do not wash it or put balm after washing it with water and then rinse it. I recommend not using shampoo when washing your hair in order the roots to remain greasy. In this way, the grease would gradually spread to the ends of the hair and protect it. We always have to use a protective product before exposing our hair to the influence of the sun.
What are your suggestions for the summer?
Women with straight hair should wash their hair with water thoroughly and then put nourishing mask. Then, they should dry the hair, the dryer front pointing downwards. I do not recommend using a hairbrush for better results. The hairstyle is better defined at the ends. In this way, the individual locks in the hair remain and when using a hairbrush, the locks separate into hairs.
Women with curly hair should use softening foam after washing and putting nourishing mask. Catch each individual lock with fingers and twist it inwards. Light and natural curls form in this way. Do all this while the hair is wet. Then, let the hair dry naturally. I do not recommend using a dryer. The more you dry the hair and touch it with hands the more the hair curls.
I suggest going out with hair piled in the evenings. You can go to the hairdresser’s or do it yourself. I recommend doing it alone because the women will look more casual in the summer. Catch the hair with an elastic band. Make a braid. Hold the hair at the end of the braid, turn it and run it through the elastic band and a beautiful ribbon forms.
Beautiful manicure and maintained nails always make a good impression. Here is the advice of the specialists from George Doukas’ studio for this season.
What are the trends and preferences for the summer of 2011?
Strong tones like the colour of watermelon, orange-golden and a lot of green in all shades are dominating. Women are looking for more strong colours in the summer, because they make the summer tan notable. Nail design is not preferable in the summer. The dominant trend in the shape of the nail is short and rectangular. UV nail polishes are appropriate for the summer season, as they will last for about three weeks.
It is fashionable, I want to do it but it does not fit me. Would you like to give some advice?
Fashion comes, fades and comes back again. Something stops to be fashionable when all people do it. To me, fashion is not something that all people do. It is the thing in the beginning, when it was born. To make something that is fashionable does not only mean that it fits you but to add your style to it. If something fits a person but the person is not able to add to it this is a failure. It is admirable when it does not fit but the person is able to add his or her style. In my opinion, everyone should take into account what fits him or her, not only what the fashion is. Nevertheless, if someone feels good doing what is fashionable, I think she or he should do it no matter that it does not fit his or her features.
