Fish, olives and cheese save the Greek economy

Due to its agricultural production Greece occupies one of the first positions in terms of global exports, as some of its products have been able to "conquer" the world. According to President of the Hellenic Union of Exporters Christina Sakelaridi, who spoke at an event organized by the Ministry of Agricultural Development, "Greek agriculture accounts for 29% of the value of Greek exports (excluding petroleum products)." Indicative is the fact that almost one third of the top 100 Greek exported products are directly related to agriculture, to the primary production of Greece.

In addition, according to the Union of Exporters, Greece is the top supplier of 43 agricultural products in 12 countries, it ranks second in terms of the supply of 19 products in 15 countries, third in the supply of 23 products in 15 other countries and fourth in the supply of 22 products in 14 countries.

Greece’s top positions

The country ranks first worldwide in terms of export of farmed fish, such as sea bream and sea bass.


Greece ranks third in the world in the production of olives, olive oil, kiwi fruits and saffron.

The country ranks fifth in the export of asparagus and fifteenth in dairy exports.

Greece is in the top 10 countries producing and exporting cotton, despite the significant decline in production in recent years.

It is the country producing more than 100 products with protected names of origin or geographical indications, which makes them unique in the world, such as Chios mastiha and feta cheese.

Major supplier of agricultural products in international markets

Greece is a major supplier of agricultural products in the international markets with a strong presence in the majority of the European Union member states and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The country is among the top five suppliers of agricultural products in 25 countries, its share in their imports exceeding 80%.

Greece’s major competitors

Its main competitors in the export of agricultural products to the European Union member states and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development are Spain and Italy, which represent almost one third (31.2%) of the overall competition. At the same time, Turkey has also emerged as one of Greece’s main competitors in terms of agricultural products. It ranks sixth with a 3.4% share in global competition.

Exports of agricultural products this year could amount to 30 billion euro

During a conference on the development of primary production, Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Athanasios Tsaftaris assumed that the exports of agricultural products this year could amount to 30 billion euro.

The minister described the production of agricultural foods as of key importance for Greek exports and specified the measures that the Ministry has taken for the further development of the sector. They include the creation of a register of approved traders, register of traders of agricultural products, programmes to support exports by sectors and products, and regulations to promote the sale of agricultural products in third countries approved by the European Union. In particular, as regards the register of approved traders, the Minister noted that 36 to 40 producer groups and cooperatives registered during the first month of its operation, and it is expected that this number will exceed 60.
