Environmental organization Feedback will organize a free lunch for 5,000 people in front of the White Tower in the centre of Thessaloniki from 11:00 am to 04:00 pm on Sunday, 9 November. The lunch will be prepared with unusual vegetables and fruits, deformed or too small, or bruised, which are not good for selling in the market. Instead of being destroyed, they will end up in saucepans to make the local traditional vegetarian dish briam. The campaign is supported by the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
"We are used to buying beautiful vegetables and fruits from supermarkets all the time, but this is not correct. What if a potato is deformed or smaller, it is still tasty and healthy," said Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, who has also joined the campaign against food waste.
"Our lunch is not just a charity for people in distress. We want to address those who have enough and tell them that instead of them throwing away food and having others digging in the rubish to find it, we can help them in a dignified way," said Maria Pashalidou, president of the organization "Thessaloniki - youth Capital of Europe 2014". "Wasting food is inadmissible at a time when so many people have economic problems," added Feedback president Niki Haralambopoulou. The organization is preparing similar events in London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York.
The dish will be prepared by 100 volunteers, members of the Association of chefs in Thessaloniki. The citizens of Thessaloniki are invited to join the campaign to the sounds of famous DJs and to participate in peeling and cutting fruits for a huge fruit salad.
