Frozen relations between filmmakers and government are melting

This year Greek movies will not participate in the race for state cinema award, organized by the Ministry of Culture. The awards will take place during the Festival of Cinema in Thessaloniki. The movies will be shown in Ellie Hall (64 Akademias str) between November 5 and 11.

The initiative to screen the films was undertaken by Filmmakers of Greece, Fog, more than 140 directors, producers and screen writers, who in July announced that they will not send “not even a frame of a Greek movie to the state cinema awards, until a new law about Greek cinema is voted for” – as it seems, they kept their word.

In a press letter they stressed once more that this gesture is not pointed towards the Festival in Thessaloniki. The only thing they want is to pressure the government to vote for a new cinema law. During the week when they will screen their films, organized will also be many seminars, discussion, concerts, happenings and parties, on which the public and the artists will meet and be able to discuss topics of the Greek cinema reality. The ticket price for one screening is €5 but there is also a ticket for three screenings, which costs €8.

Except for the 29 out of 35 film and documentaries directors, the “strike” was joined by another 50 directors of short films. Their demand is for a plan to be developed for the support and development of short films. Minister of culture Pavlos Geroulanos said that the new cinema law is among his priorities and the bill will soon be introduced in the National Assembly.
