Vassiliki Vougiouka brought a gold medal for Greece from the World championship in fencing, which was held in Budapest. When she climbed the highest step of the ladder at the stage the young athlete bestowed to the Greek fencing one of the best moments for any sport, and further more the medal she won in Budapest is the first gold medal in the history of the Greek fencing. Her victories the young athlete started in the “64” stage. There she played without taking part in the preliminary qualification rounds because of her high position in the world rank list. Vougiouka scored four victories before she won against the Corean Kim at the semi finals and the Italian Bartsoka at the finals. For the journalist from the Greek press she commented on her victory very modestly by claiming she did not expect to take such a high position and that after she qualified for the final four she was just being happy for her success and not thinking about a further victory. This took the additional stress away from her and without realizing it she got the gold medal…
The great success of the 24 years old Greek seems to be a logical reward to her active sports career. In Greece Vougiouka starts her career in 2002 when she wins the ladies fencing tournament (with foil). In November 2004 she is the winner in the Grand prix in fencing in OAKA (again with foil). In April 2002 during the world male and female junior championship in Turkey she managed to qualify among the first 16. During the two championships for the word cup which were held in March 2003 in Athens the Greek took 32nd place, which was also the highest place taken by a Greek (in the competition took part 76 competitors in foil).
