Golden Dawn collects blood only for Greeks

If some people in Greece have been thinking that Golden Dawn has already shown its real face, they have apparently been overhasty. If, at least, they have not seen the message of the extreme right organization that it is making a blood bank only for Greeks.

The official announcement reads that the donation of blood is made in Sotiria Hospital in Athens at the initiative of Golden Dawn’s "green wing." The announcement of the organization states, "Solidarity to the Greeks. Blood bank only for the Greeks who need our help." On the website of the organization, there is a poster with telephone numbers and addresses in different cities, where the extreme right has been organizing campaigns for blood collection.

"The blood bank in Sotiria Hospital has been operating for about 20 days now. It has been operating in Ipokratio Hospital in Thessaloniki for three years," George Papageorgiou said, according to whom the "green wing" is Golden Dawn’s group for ecology. He said that the organization would manage the collected blood like various organizations and companies do. "We will provide it only to Greeks," he said.

Sotiria Hospital’s manager Yiannis Stephanou said, in turn, that any interested citizen could donate blood. According to the information available so far, there has been no campaign for blood collection organized by members of Golden Dawn.

In addition, doctors say there is no guarantee that the blood donor will receive the blood donated by him/her or by the members of the blood donation society to which they belong. In practice, this means that the blood donated by a member of the racist organization can be transfused into any immigrant and respectively, the blood donated by immigrants may be transfused into the veins of a member of Golden Dawn.

There was an immediate response in social media. A copy of Golden Dawn’s poster with a motto "Solidarity to fascists" was immediately posted. Its authors also wrote, "Brain and brain cells bank only for fascists, because they do not have them at all." Under the heading "Information and applications for participation," it is noted, "Even if we gave you an address you will still make a mistake. Contact: impossible due to lack of brains."

The vision of the extreme right party already present in parliament on how to "clear Greece" as it promised before the elections does not stop there. Last week, about 40 youths, dressed in the typical black clothes, went to the shops in Agiou Nicolaou square in the Athens suburb of Nicaea and warned their owners - immigrants to close them and leave the country within a week. According to the warned people and their Greek neighbours, the fixed time was a week. It expired on Monday and the immigrants have not left the area.

According to an article in Ta Nea newspaper, the author of which referred to eyewitnesses, a group of 40 motorcycle riders had stopped in front of four shops in the square last Saturday. They began shouting at the owners - immigrants from Pakistan, "Close the shops. You have a week."

On the same day, the local organization of Golden Dawn had held a motorcycle procession in Nicaea, as stated on the website of the party.

Immigrants from Pakistan claim that one of the places, where they had stopped, was their shops. The owners of neighbouring shops and sites confirmed the information.

Ibrahim Muhammad was in his grocery when he heard the shouts. "They had gathered in the square and sent the immigrants away. They told them to go away and not return there. Fortunately, they did not attack anyone. Their threats were only verbal. They got close to the windows, but did not go inside. They told us to close and not to work when they come here. They said that no one must open his shop after seven days."

A week later, all the shops are open except one, which however had been closed for some time because its owner, also a Pakistani, feared for his safety. Tomorrow, left organizations will hold an anti-fascist protest in the square.

Golden Dawn refuted the information and blamed "the media-servants of the system" of defamation. "Golden Dawn is a legitimate political party that will succeed in solving the monstrous problem of illegal immigration by parliamentary and political activity," the official statement of the organization reads.

Meanwhile, the Greek Ombudsman expressed concern about the increasing cases of racist violence. "Extreme groups hiding behind the feeling of insecurity among citizens have been carrying out attacks against immigrants." The authority is calling the relevant departments "to prevent the formation of organized criminal groups that are taking advantage of the inaction and slow response by government authorities."
