Greece’s leadership in the third group of the Basketball World Championship in Ankara is already in the past after the blue-whites have justly lost from Turkey with 76-65. The hosts led the game and the result during most of the match and the game of the guests was tedious and scoreless. Both teams won their first matches – Greece defeated China and Puerto Rico while Turkey scored a victory over the Ivory Coast and Russia without any efforts.

11 000 people watched the match among which were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries – Dimitris Droutsas and Ahmed Davutoğlu. The coach of the Turkish basketball national team Bogdan Tanjević provoked the Greek media with his statement before the match that “if the match with Russia was a battle, the match with Greece will be the war at Gelibolu.” During the First World War the allied troops attacked Turkey at Gelibolu and thousands of soldiers died in the epic battle.

The Greek national team will face the Ivory Coast team at 6:30 pm tonight.
