The national football team of Greece will play against Croatia, Israel, Georgia, Latvia and Malta during the classification matches for the European Championship, which will be held in Poland and Ukraine in 2012. The draw for Euro 2012 was withdrawn yesterday in Warsaw and it can certainly be considered as "lucky" because Greece has managed to avoid the danger "company" of strong opponents. Greece has already played against Latvia and Israel during the classification matches for this year's World Cup, while Malta was its opponent in the classification phase of Euro 2008. The most serious threat is the team of Croatia, which has three appearances in the finals of the World Cup - in 1998, 2002, 2006, but failed to qualify for the 2010 Mundial. Croatia has participated in the final stages of the European Championship three times - in 1996, 2004 and 2008.
Both teams have played four matches against each other, culminating in one victory for Greece, one victory for Croatia and two equal results.
With the national team of Israel, Greece has had thirteen matches, six of which ended in a victory for Greece, five with a tie and two with victory for Israel. So far Israel's team has not been able to qualify for the final phase of the European Championship, although it has participated in four classification rounds.
Greece met the Latvian team in 2000 during the Cup of Europe Championship and during the classification matches for the 2010World Cup. The biggest success of Latvia is its ranking in the final stage of the Cup Championship of Europe. Both teams have had four matches, two out of which ended with victory for Greece, one with a tie and one with a victory for Latvia.
The least threat is the team of Georgia. Its history is not big since it was founded only in 1990. In 1996 the team took part in the European Championship and it did not register success. Overall, the team has no success at international level. Until now, Greece and Georgia have played five matches, all of which ended with victory for Greece.
51 national European teams, which are divided by lot into 6 groups of 6 teams in 3 groups of 5 teams, have qualified for Euro 2012. The nine winners in the separate groups and the best second team qualify for the finals, and the eight teams, which finished in second place, will play a barrage in order to qualify for the next round. As hosts of Euro 2012 Poland and Ukraine automatically qualify for the finals. The qualification matches will be played from September 2010 to November 2011.
