Greece would meet its obligations to all creditors, Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis assured after the emergency meeting with Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde. He stressed there was no doubt that Greece would pay the outstanding amount of 450 million euro to the Fund on Thursday, 9 April.
The meeting took place in Washington at noon, on the Catholic Easter day itself and lasted two hours and twenty minutes. Christine Lagarde in turn said that the Greek government had committed itself not to hamper the work of the team of technocrats in Athens. The talks at the level of both the Brussels group and the technical teams in Athens will continue today, 6 April. "Uncertainty is not in the interest of Greece," said Christine Lagarde.
Yanis Varoufakis told reporters in Washington that the government would undertake major reforms that would improve the effectiveness of negotiations with the institutions. In recent days, the representatives of the International Monetary Fund were apparently irritated by the slow progress of the mission in Athens. Christine Lagarde and Yanis Varoufakis shared the opinion that good cooperation would be in the interest of all, and the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund emphasized the commitment of the Fund to help the Greek economy to take the path of sustainable development.
Today Yanis Varoufakis will have meetings with the economic and financial circles in Washington.
