Greece Wins against Spain in a Dramatic Game in Alimos Pool

The female water polo team in the country made a step up to the classification for the finals of the World League. The Greek players wan the team of Spain 16-14 in a dramatic match. Тhey gained their advantage at the end of the game with penalty shots. The teams played the fourth and final first round match of the qualifications in the Alimos pool in Athens.

The Greek team started the match with a weaker game than its Spanish opponent. It was difficult for the girls to find the right rhythm during the first eight minutes. They didn’t organize a good attack and they also had problems with the defence. So they allowed the guests to lead 3-2.

The second period was very successful for Greece. The girls pulled themselves together and succeeded to beat their Spanish opponent. By dizzy game they wrecked its defense and blocked any plans of resistance. There were 4 goals... and the Spanish girls proved to be quite unprepared for the surprise which the second period brought. They failed to prevent either of the goals. The goal keeper of the team – Esther – gave way to the stress in the Alimos pool. The Spanish girls failed to save a series of balls. With the 4-0 score in the second period Greece led with 6-3.
 
The Greek girls had bad luck in the third period again. They returned to their former image and were again defeated by their opponent. The Spanish girls took advantage of the moment of weakness of the hosts and proceeded to massive attacks. The player Meseger was the one who helped the guests to catch the difference in the score in this and the next period. Tension in the pool rose. The teams went hand in hand in the score. Angeliki Gerolimou helped the Greek team to lead with 11-10. Immediately thereafter Meseger attacked and made the score equal again ...

The winner of the last match of the phase could be determined only by penalty shots. The players Antonakou, Lyosi, Avramidou, Gerolimou, Rubesi shot the penalties. The Spanish girls in turn attacked by Pareha, Meseger, Garcia, Esparta.

After the game on Sunday Greece ranked first with 11 points, second is the Netherlands with 9 points, Spain takes the third place with 7, France is fourth with 3 and South Africa is fifth with 0.
