Greek Mazda representative goes bankrupt

Thousands of Mazda car owners are concerned as ELMA S.A., the official and exclusive importer and representative of Mazda factory in Greece since 1982, has filed for bankruptcy and suspension of payments. Now the court must decide whether the request will be accepted or not.

Mazda - Europe company will have to provide for the customers of ELMA S.A. in terms of spare parts and guarantees, but many car owners are wondering if they will be fully secured in fact and what will happen with the servicing of their cars in the future.

According to the latest published balance sheet for 2012, ELMA S.A. had a turnover of 13 million euro compared to 40 million euro in 2011, a loss to the amount of 23 million euro, negative equity of 30 million euro and a short-term bank loan amounting to 116 million euro. The company obligations to employees amounted to 5 million euro.

Mazda official website states the following:

The general representation of Mazda vehicles in Greece belongs exclusively to the group of companies owned by the Kortesis family that has been known in the automotive sector since 1936 when Ioannis Kortesis assumed the representation of Ford vehicles through Stakor company.
