The majority of Greeks express a clear position in favour of the safety of bank deposits and Greece’s remaining in the euro zone, as shown by the results of a poll conducted by MRB agency for the Greek STAR TV. At the same time, they are against the proposal for the government to harden further its line to the lenders if it means a Grexit.
59.8% of Greeks respond to this question with "rather not" or "definitely not", while the percentage of those who respond "rather yes" and "definitely yes" is 38.4%.
Public opinion in terms of the support for the hard line of the Greek cabinet even if it leads to a restriction on capital flow is similar. 52.2% of Greeks respond "rather not" or "definitely not" whereas 44.2% respond "rather yes" and "definitely yes".
At the same time, the difference between the ruling radical left SYRIZA party and New Democracy is still huge, namely 22.1%. The responses to the question, "Which party would you vote for if the elections were next Sunday" ranked the political parties in the following way:
SYRIZA - 41.3%
New Democracy - 19.2%
Independent Greeks - 5.4 %
Potami - 5.4%
Communist Party of Greece - 5.3%
Golden Dawn - 5.1%.
PASOK would not have entered parliament at all, as it collects only 2.9% of voters' preferences. 4.8% indicate "other party" and the percentage of undecided voters is 10.6%.
As to the question, "Which two words express you more as a Greek with regard to the position of the government that has been expressed so far," 51.8% indicate the word "hope", 24.9% "pride" and 8.8% "self-esteem".
49.1% of participants state that they are "anxious", 24.4% are "afraid" and 12 out of every 100 Greeks say they are "ashamed" of the actions of the new government.
According to the vast majority of Greeks (71.9%) Alexis Tsipras is perfectly coping with the prime minister's duties whereas 24.9% have a negative opinion of his actions.
The assessment of the position of Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis is similar - 70.4% of Greeks have a positive opinion of him and 24.6% negative.
The responses to the question "How do you define the new agreement with the lenders?" are particularly interesting in view of the domestic political debate as to whether the agreement reached at the last meeting of the Eurogroup is something new or just a continuation of the memorandum that is in force at present. 70.3% of respondents indicate that it is better than the current one whereas 19.7% think it is worse.
In parallel and contrary to the statements of the government, 39.1% of Greeks believe that the agreement is a continuation of the memorandum. The percentage of Greeks who perceive the agreement as something new is 31.2%.
69% of Greeks have a positive opinion of the coalition SYRIZA - Independent Greeks and 24.7% a negative one. At the same time, according to 57.9% of respondents, the conflicts within the party will eventually create problems for the cabinet.
