Immigrants destitute in the streets of Athens

Athens' central squares are again teeming with illegal immigrants, among them women and children, who sleep in tents, sleeping bags or wrapped in blankets in the frosty December nights. Meteorologists are warning of an encroaching wave of cold weather that will make the refugees' situation even more miserable.

Every day, Athens is being flooded by thousands of people from Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, starting by boat from Turkey, arriving on the islands, and then ferried by the government to the Greek capital.

Municipal employees in charge of street cleaning, are warning about the dramatic situation of street inhabitants, while Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis has put the blame squarely at the government's door for the concentration of such numbers of immigrants without having any sort of plan to deal with them.
