Many theatre plays, the operas "Don Giovanni" by Mozart and "Othello" by Verdi and dance performances by world-renowned choreographers Trisha Brown and Jiri Kylian will be presented to the residents and visitors to Athens during the summer months.

The programme of Athens Epidaurus Festival 2014 includes five international and 27 Greek plays, 23 of which will be presented at theatres in Athens, three at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus and one at the small eponymous ancient theatre.

Marivaux’s play "The False Confessions" starring Isabelle Huppert and directed by Luc Bondy is awaited with great interest. It will be performed on 12-14 June at the cultural centre "House of letters and arts" of the Onassis Foundation.

The play "Green Porno" with Isabella Rossellini will be performed on the festival stage at 260 Piraeus Street from 24 June to 26 June. Theatre lovers can see the play "Todo el cielo sobre la tierra" by Angelica Liddell on the same stage from 15 June to 17 June.

"Don Giovanni" will be performed on 13, 14, 15 and 17 June, and "Othello" on 27, 29 and 31 July at the ancient Irodio theatre at the foot of the Acropolis.

The majority of the Greek plays are the work of young artists. They will have to compete with works by ancient playwrights within the context of the 60th anniversary edition of the festival at Epidaurus.

Commenting on why the festival will not present internationally renowned names in the field of classical music, its director George Skokos states, "When you learn how much money you will have only five months before the start of the festival you cannot even think of turning to spaces where the performances are being planned several years before being implemented."

During the festival, there will also be numerous art exhibitions. The entire festival programme is available here.

This year's festival budget is 2 million euro and the management hopes to receive private funding.
