Illegal adoptions of Bulgarian children in Greece have been thriving for years. While human misfortune and the desire of childless couples to take care of a child are an underlying factor, the rest is a business that benefits people with stunted moral values. Society has become aware of too many cases to activate public conscience. In this connection, we asked, “Why do you think illegal adoption of Bulgarian children is thriving in Greece?” Depending on the language version and type of readers, the responses are again diverse and give grounds for reflection.

On the Bulgarian page of GRReporter, 52% of respondents believe that the scheme involves lawyers, doctors, officials and therefore there is noone to oppose child trafficking. Unfortunately, the typical Bulgarian resignation is apparent again, complemented by the lack of trust in the responsible institutions. The option that illegal adoptions will continue as long as there is a supply of children in Bulgaria and demand in Greece ranks second and it is the preference of 24% of readers. 13% support the statement that the process cannot be stopped, which is why the authorities have to find a way to control it. 12% of our readers perceive as the reason for illegal adoptions the misery in which the Roma in Bulgaria live and which forces them to sell their children.

Readers of the English page of the website see things differently. 43% of them are of the opinion that if there is supply and demand, illegal adoptions will continue. 22% of respondents believe that the process cannot be stopped, so it is better to control it. According to 19% of readers, the phenomenon involves different groups that have access to the levers of power and financial resources, and therefore it is impossible to stop it. 16% of respondents consider poverty among Roma as the reason for illegal adoptions.

The responses to the poll on the Greek page are different too. 44% of readers believe that lawyers, doctors and officials are at the basis of the entire process. 25% support the view that the phenomenon cannot be limited, so it must be controlled. 19% of readers blame illegal adoptions on the miserable living conditions of the Roma. 13% recognize that trafficking in children will continue if there is supply in Bulgaria and demand in Greece.

In conclusion, we can summarize that the Bulgarian and Greek readers consider as the main reason for illegal adoptions the unscrupulous actions of lawyers, doctors and officials who are directly involved in the process and manage it. According to the English-speaking readers, the reasons are the demand for children for adoption in Greece and the supply of children for adoption from poor families in Bulgaria. We see that a significant part of readers of the three language versions of the website want the process to be legalized and controlled, as it cannot be stopped.

Our new poll is related to the murder of 4-year-old Ani, which shocked all of Greece and provoked a strong reaction in Bulgaria, the Balkans and Europe. Due to the significant media interest, the question is, “Do you approve how the media are covering the case of missing 4-year-old Ani Borisova?” Do not forget to justify your response in the section for comments below the poll.
