As the French Cultural Institute announced, Jean-Paul Gaultier will be open the 11th French Film Festival in Athens. The famous designer, who does not hide his love for Greece, wishes to show his support for the promotion of French productions in the country.
Gaultier’s relationship with cinema goes back in time. He has participated in the creation of not many films, but all of them had an interesting and different aesthetic point of view. For the first time Gaultier gets involved in filmmaking in 1989 when he designs the clothes for Peter Greenaway’s film “The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover”. Thereafter followed cult productions like "Kika" (1991) and "Bad Education" (2004) by Pedro Almodovar, "The Fifth Element" (1997) by Luc Besson, and “City of lost children "(1995), Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Gene.
Gaultier has also worked for the TV series Dangerous Liaisons with Catherine Deneuve. This year, the organizers of the festival of French cinema will give carte blanche to Gaultier to present his favorite films. This year the festival will present 65 films, most of which will make their premiers in Athens and as always, city directors, actors and producers will arrive, who will meet with the audience to share their expertise and experiences.
The festival is sponsored by Unifrance and it underlines the interest of Greece for French cinema, whose share on the world market is 8%. The festival will be held between April 15 and 25 in Athens, and after that the films will travel to Thessaloniki, where in Olympion Hall French film fans will be able to see them between April 22 and 28, 2010.
