"Larissa, the city of coffee" may be considered a cliché expression but at the samt time it is not far from reality. With its 1,674 cafés, the city ranks first with the highest number of coffee-selling firms.
According to the Chamber of Commerce in Larissa, there are a total of 16,308 registered companies in the city, 1,674 of which are coffee-selling firms. This ratio means that 10% of local business is coffee-oriented.
Most interesting of all, however, is the ratio of residents and cafés in the city. According to the latest census, the number of permanent residents is 162,591. Accounting for the fact that people from all over the region visit the city, there are approximately 200,000 people in Larissa every day.
Therefore, there is one café per every 119 permanent residents and visitors to the city, a "shocking and terrifying" number compared to the data from other Greek cities.
Moreover, according to data of the Chamber of Commerce, in Larissa there are 1,269 restaurants, which constitute 8% of the total number of companies.
Therefore, 18% of local establishments are entirely eating establishments.
