Greece’s top racket Lena Danilidou managed to reach the final of the international tennis tournament Vogue Athens Open 2009 which takes places this weekend, with the final played today at 2 p.m. She had to beat Italy’s Maria-Elena Camerin in an entertaining semi that lasted three hours and 16 minutes. “I could have closed the game earlier, but that’s irrelevant. I won and that’s what matters” said the Greek professional. Concerning her opponent, she added:”She’s an excellent player, but lacks in consistency on the court.” The other finalist Jelena Dokic eliminated Kristina Kucova in her semi with 6:1 and 6:4 in the two sets.

By reaching the final, Lena Danilidou claimed a prize of €15,000 offered by Antonis Liberis – founder and president of the Vogue Athens Open international tennis tournament. The bonus was reserved for a Greek contestant to reach the final. Camerin was left powerless following her exhausting quarter final against Romania’s Monika Nikulesku which lasted for 5 hours and Danilidou dominated the game. Despite her defeat, the Italian racket was very pleased by the tournament in Athens and pledged to participate in Vogue Athens Open 2010 as well.

Greece was represented by a total of four players in the tournament, who were joined by last year’s winner Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain. Furthermore, 20 of the participants in the tournament are among the women’s world top 100.
