The capital district of Viotia, Livadia, is located between the mountains of Parnassos and Elikonas.

In antiquity, the oracle of Trofoni was very famous and today his traces can be found on the relevant archaeological site. During the rule of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the city started its development, and its inhabitants, who had fled to other cities returned. In 1841, Livadia was already among the economic centres of the newly established Greek Kingdom.

Today, Livadia is known for its modern infrastructure and... 40 young men (according to the legendary Greek folk song). Of course, it is also known for its delicious souvlakia, unique roasted lamb and kokoretsi.

Furthermore, the area is attractive to tourists during the period before Easter because of the custom known as the "pit" during which the whole town turns into a huge grill.

Sights

Livadia has many sights and you can visit historical and cultural landmarks and places of entertainment.

Take a walk around Kria (with the springs of the Erkina River) and along the paved streets of the city centre, with beautiful trees, flowing waters and many small waterfalls. Along the Erkina River, you will see stone bridges with amazing beauty and remarkable technique, which date from the period of the Ottoman rule, as well as the mill and many old buildings. The springs of the river supply the entire city with water.

In the museum, you can see exhibits of textile production, agricultural tools, household utensils, and a collection of old photographs.

From this region, you can continue to the gorge on Kria. The road ends at a plateau beyond which the walk can be extended along a relatively difficult path which leads to the bridge of Trichino. At the gorge, there is a climbing park with 15 routes.

The Clock Tower, which was built during the Latin domination, is also worth seeing. Be sure to take a walk to the two central squares of Livadia, connected via a pedestrian area.

You can also visit the Byzantine fortress located on Mount St. Elias which rises above the city, offering a unique view.

From Livadia, you can make excursions to Parnassos ski resort and Mount Elikonas.
