An artistic happening is stunning Athens' citizens and guests: the 3D video projection mapping on the City Hall building in Kotzia Square.
It is a part of LuminAthens Christmas Festival: a Christmas celebration of creative self-expression through high-tech means. The festival will transform Athens into a centre of contemporary art, and a bridge between classical culture and the future of art. The projections on the building will be repeated today from 20:00 to 21:30.
Given the importance of the games building, the artistic team is carefully planning the audio-visual installation by matching the power of architecture with the dynamics of three-dimensional imaging.
The purpose of this audio-visual spectacle is to liven up the building and offer a unique experience to the audiences at the square.
Artists from all over Greece are using the new technologies to create works that "throw open" the buildings of Athens. The works are being projected on the facades of heritage buildings, changing the shapes and colours with the iridescence of lights, thus spectacularly manifesting their cultural value.
The peak of the festival will be on 31 December when the hotels in Syntagma Square – Grande Bretagne and King George – will "participate" as well by turning into screens from 19:00 to 22:00 h. The exciting spectacle of light reflections will attract Athens' visitors, and will become a cultural event of worldwide repercussions.
This artistic approach reflects and combines two art forms: classical sculpture and cinema. At the same time, the projections transform the buildings' architecture and decoration achieving a spectacular audio-visual effect.
