If you want to relax, enjoying the endless blue, the Mani region is the ideal destination for you. The villages of Mani are the most beautiful villages in Greece, and are situated only 240 km from Athens. Fortunately, the road is good and you will not get bored. What is worth seeing?

Limeni, the steep one

This tiny traditional village at the southern end of the bay is located 5 km from Areopolis and is a favourite destination. Its houses seem to hang above the sea which gives a sense of freedom and is one of the most beautiful villages in the vicinity. You can enjoy the sea, which has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean waters.

The Mavromichalis family

The village is closely linked to the historical Mavromichalis family. Here you can see the tower of the family, as well as the Palace of Mavromichalis. During the rule of Petro Bey Mavromichalis, the last Bey of Mani, the headquarters of the Maniates was located here before and during the revolution of 1821.

The monastery of Panagia Vretis is also nearby. It was built in 1731 and is worth visiting to admire its icons. You can take a walk in Neo Itilo and Karavostasi which are also nearby.

At Takis’s Tavern for sardines

Mani is renowned for its gastronomy. You can enjoy freshly caught fish at Takis’s Tavern in Limeni – a culinary stop which you should not miss. It is better to come at sunset because of the stunning view. You can see huge turtles in the water swimming right beside you.

Itilo

Stratis Mirivilis wrote: "Mani is a small Greece, unknown to all of us and is so unique and impressive, and has such a strong and special character, that it does not resemble any other place in Greece." This also applies to Itilo.

It proudly stands at the same place where the ancient city of Itilon was once located - the city of Menelaus, according to Homer. This is an ideal starting point for those who love hiking. The route from Karavostasi to Prifitis Ilias is an ideal choice. During the Turkish rule, the seat of the most powerful families in the region was here.

Diros cave: a unique experience

At a short distance, less than half an hour by car, you will find Diros cave, which is the first of the three most beautiful cave lakes in the world, followed by Pantirak in southern France and Zaita in Beirut. Do not miss the boat trip in order to visit it.
