In Memoriam Glafcos Clerides

Because of the coup and the Turkish invasion, he was interim president of the Republic, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution until 7 December 1974, the day when Archbishop Makarios returned to Cyprus, who was forced to resign on 16 July 1974. President Makarios himself and the House of Representatives publicly thanked Glafcos Clerides for the work he did during this period.

In 1969 ,he established the Unified Party

In February 1969, he established the Unified Party and a few years later, in May 1976, he established the Democratic Rally of selected members of the Unified Party and the Progressive Faction of the National Democratic Party.

In 1968 he was appointed spokesman for the Greek Cypriot side in the intercommunal talks. From this position he held talks with Rauf Denktash until April 1976. During discussions of the Cyprus issue at the Security Council of the UN, Glafcos Clerides represented his country on several occasions.

He was chairman of the Red Cross in Cyprus from 1961 to 1963, and in recognition of his outstanding service, he was awarded with honours and named life member. With the approval of His Holiness Pope John XXIII, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in recognition of his work in terms of the recognition of the religious minority of Roman Catholics in Cyprus.

President of the Republic since 14 February 1993

In the parliamentary elections of 1981, 1985 and 1991, he was elected as an MP in Nicosia. In the House of Representatives, he was a party chairman of the parliamentary group until his election as President of the Republic on 14 February 1993.

Kliridis was re-elected for the last time as president on 15 February 1998.

He was married to Lila-Irini and had a daughter, Katie Kliridou, who is a member of the political bureau of the Democratic union and has been working as an MP for years.

Glafcos Clerides will be remembered for his so-called "real politics".
