Winner of several gold Oscar statuettes Meryl Streep will portray legendary opera diva Maria Callas in a film production based on Terrence McNally’s play "Master Class".
According to the US edition "New York Post", the director of the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning show will be Mike Nichols. The action takes place in 1971, when Maria Callas taught at the Juilliard School of Music.
The play was presented for the first time in Broadway in 1995 and Australian actress Zoe Caldwell was in the role of Maria Callas. In it, the legendary soprano talks about her life and career, and about her drama when Aristotle Onassis left her because of John F. Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline.
Sources from the film circles say that the filming will begin next January. Meryl Street will portray Callas after playing a series of successful roles, including those of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the editor of "Vogue" fashion magazine, Anne Winter, and chef Julia Child, who is extremely popular on US television.
