Marfin Investment Group president Andreas Vgenopoulos announced today that he has kept the name “Macedonian Airlines,” which will be given to Olympic Air’s daughter company. “We have acquired a registration number and no one else can fly under that name,” said he during Olympic Air’s official opening. His announcement provoked an emotional reaction on the Thessaloniki airport “Macedonia,” because the name of the Macedonian national carrier is “MAT Macedonian Airlines”.

The new airline will have its headquarters in Thessaloniki and it will set its first flight in few months. The idea is to cover the needs of businessmen and tourists in Northern Greece. Vgenopoulos announced that next week he will meet businessmen from Northern Greece, in order to discuss some procedure questions. According to information provided by Kathemerini newspaper, the first flights of the new company will fly to Germany and Amsterdam.

Today Olympic Air set its first flight to Thessaloniki – the same way 52 years ago the founded by Aristotle Onassis company made its premiere flight to the same city. “We do not own the name Olympic, we only manage it. The name belongs to all Greeks,” said with pathos Andreas Vgenopoulos. He promised that Olympic Air will have the newest airpark in Europe.
