While the ceremony submission of the renovated Parthenon at a congress specifically organized for the event is being prepared in the building of the New museum of the Acropolis were presented the modern technologies used for the restoration of the sacred cliff.

“Currently Greece could export know-how regarding the application of the new technologies in the field of restoration”, said the Secretary general of the Ministry of culture Lina Medoni. The service for restoration of monuments on the sacred cliff has always taken advantage of the international and European programs in order to achieve better results in the restoration and protection of the Acropolis, added also Mrs. Medoni.

After Easter a great part of the restoration of the Parthenon will finish and finally we will see the Propylaea in their final version after their restoration. The works for the restoration of the sacred cliff have been going on for 30 years and will continue at least few more. In the next weeks however many of the “eternal” scaffoldings surrounding the Acropolis will be removed and the cliff will have a completely new image. Currently two of the monuments are finished – the Erechtheum and the Propylaea or the antechamber and two more monuments remain to be finished – the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike.

The new technologies which have been provided to the Acropolis Restoration Service brought important results and currently programs for the recording of the data regarding the behavior of the antiques during earthquakes are still going on and the temperature, humidity and so on are measured using optical fibers.

The director of the Acropolis Restoration Service Mary Yoanidou pointed out that the photogram and other prints, which have been made, could be used in various ways. They are extremely accurate and show the problems analytically. The pictures that have been taken in the case of the Acropolis from specifically built meteorological balloons with the equipment installed on them. The problem in making pictures from an airplane is that the flights above the Acropolis are banned if the height is less than 5000 feet. However even when using a balloon because of the winds during most of the days in the year it was very hard to take the pictures because of the movement of the balloons. A total of 4000 pictures have been used and this program for the use of the specific equipment is the biggest one on a world wide scale.

From the photogram documents for the Erechtheum a 3D scanning has been made in order for the building to be viewed by the computer in its almost real version. During the up coming activities for the restoration of the Parthenon a total of 6 metopes will be taken in the Museum of the Acropolis and they will be replaced by copies.
