Unemployment in Greece has reached a record 20.9% or more than 1 million people. Active working people are less than 4 million according to the data of the national statistical service for November 2011. The total number of people not working in Greece including pensioners and children is 4,423,657 people.
By comparison, in October of the same year, the rate of unemployment was 18.2%. The average unemployment in all 17 eurozone member states is 10.4%, which is slightly higher than the rate in October 2011 – 10.3%.
In Greece, what is worse is the situation of young people, as the percentage of those unemployed is 48%. Unemployment among young Greeks is traditionally high - in 2010, it was 35.6%, in 2009 – 27.8%, in 2008 – 22.4%.
Trade unions of employees in public and private sectors have announced a new 48-hour general strike in Greece on Friday and Saturday, 10 and 11 February.
