More weddings but less sex

The number of weddings in Greece is increasing but spouses have no sexual relations, according to the study conducted by the Andrology Institute and the Hellenic Society for the Study of Human Sexuality.

According to the results, marriages in the country have increased by 30% since the beginning of the crisis but, at the same time, 8 out of every 10 men are unfaithful to their partners, and 6 out of 10 women have extramarital relations.

Despite the unfaithfulness, spouses prefer to live as "soul mates", without sexual attraction between them and without considering the lack of sex as a reason to separate.

"The economic, and with it the civilizational, crisis in Greece seems to be creating uncertainties in its residents. Perhaps this explains the need for a stable relationship, such as marriage, despite its known effects on sexual life. In addition to libido, the crisis in the country seems to affect orgasm as well. The number of men who complain of premature ejaculation has almost doubled, and the reason for this is the strong sense of anxiety and stress. The number of men who prefer masturbation to sexual intercourse has almost doubled too," said Director of the Andrology Institute and the Hellenic Society for the Study of Human Sexuality Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis.

That study and another 40 topics related to the sexual behaviour of Greeks are presented at a conference on Human Sexuality and Reproduction that is scheduled to take place in Athens on 3-4 April.
