Chain shops for consumer electronics in Greece also report remarkable results as they were able to sell 150,000 TV sets in less than a month.

Senior executives of retail companies made this statement for Ethnos newspaper, attributing the impressive rise in sales to football fans and their passion for the Mundial, the love of Greeks for the national football team as well as to the economic recession that is forcing the fans to gather and watch the matches at home.

The calculations of the managers show that, from the beginning of the World Cup to this day, between 150,000 and 180,000 TV sets have been sold in Greece.

The managers of Kotsovolos chain, which ranks first in the market in terms of sales, speak about a 20%-25% increase in sales in the market, not in their shops alone, without stating the volume of sales and turnover (i.e. the number of TV sets sold and the price in euro).

Furthermore, they claim that 15% of the additional sales made during this period involved TV sets with 46-inch screens and bigger.

The calculations therefore show that the number of large-screen TV sets purchased was between 22,500 and 27,000. Football fans want to watch their favourite matches as if they are in the stadium.

The managers claim that the sales of TV sets will rise while the Greek national team is advancing in the World Cup, not excluding sales growth until the match with Costa Rica.

Each year, the sales of TV sets range from 550,000 to 600,000.

However, an upward trend has been reported over the past year. This is because technology has developed and new types of TV sets (screens, smart devices, etc.) have appeared on the one hand and because of the crisis on the other.

The contraction of income has forced households to buy large-screen TV sets, as friends now prefer to gather at home and rarely go out to cafes and bars where they will have to spend a lot more money.

Simultaneously, the retail chains for consumer electronics announce various promotions, discounts and sale by instalments, thus allowing more consumers to buy the super large screen of their dreams.
