The new coach of Olympiacos needs time

“I have no magic wand. We’ll have to work hard and be patient.” With these words the new coach of the football team Olympiacos Ernesto Valverde started the preparation for the new season of the just entrusted players. The Spaniard, who is back on the coach bench of the red-whites after 15 months, is determined to put the fatal state of the team to an end. Valverde has the strong support of Vangelis Marinakis, but whether time will support him? It is luxury in the team of Marinakis and it seems another clock measures it. The contract for the two years coaching post may last for two months ... As long as it lasted for the German coach Ewald Linen. Linen was released as soon as the red-whites lost from Maccabi Tel Aviv and dropped from further participation in Europa League. “I am the coach and it is logical to take the blame. What is happening is a huge disappointment for all” – said the German coach, hoping to be understood. However, Marinakis did not play the game of extenuating circumstances.

The work of Ernesto Valverde will not be easy for sure. He will have to build a basically new team. He will have to remedy the psychological condition of the players who are exhausted by the constant change of coaches and lack of final strategy. The team crisis is very tangible,  there is almost no faith in tomorrow.

It was more than ten years ago when Olympiakos had a back of steel. The success of the white-reds was due to Dusan Bayevich who managed to lay foundations that passed the tests of time. Will the Spaniard be able to create a winning team now?

What is crucial at the moment is the friendly match against Roma. Both teams will play on August 13, on Karaiskaki Stadium in Athens. It is expected to show up the Olympiakos’ weaknesses and Valverde to decide which players will drop out and which will fill the gaps.
