The Parliament approved the project of the budget of the PASOK government for 2010. 160 members of Parliament voted “for” and 139 voted “against” the enacting of the new financial program of Greece, which is defined to be the first step to the rehabilitation of the economic stability of the country. The main goal stipulated in the budget is the decrease of the national deficit from the current 12,7% to 9,1% of the GDP by the end of the year 2010.

In his speech before the voting the Prime Minister George Papandreou stated that in the program are included all political and economic priorities of PASOK, which were presented as a pre election campaign during the parliament elections in October this year. The Prime Minister pointed out the measures for assisting the development of the national health care and education and underlined that the upcoming reforms will protect the interests of the weakest layers of the society. He stated that the 2010 budget will provide the necessary financial stimuli of the country which will rehabilitate the local economy and will create prerequisites for the restoration of the trust of the foreign markets in Greece. Papandreou did not forget to notice that the former government of New democracy has lead the country to “one step before the complete collapse” and “has abandoned the ship” in the last moment leaving the country in despicable condition. In his speech George Papandreou also said: “For two months our government did more things than the previous one did for five years.”

The voting was carried out after five days of debates in which took part members of the Parliament from all parties inside the Parliament. Regardless of the discussions between the governing party and the opposing party, no changes were introduced in the structure and the content of the project of the budget. It was voted as it was introduced in the Parliament.
