Drivers of trucks and tanks begin on Monday another indefinite strike. Nearly 32,000 trucks will park tomorrow in the big cities, and their drivers and owners demonstratively will throw their keys in the ministry of transport and in the regional administrations. This is the second strike in two months after the same protest in July ended with the mobilization of the drivers.
This time, however, public opinion is not taking the side of the protesters, whose claims are considered not aimed at the customers and to the detriment of ordinary taxpayers. They turned even more the public opinion against them when in Tessaloniki the members of their union attacked with wooden sticks, hidden under their banners the president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce Constantine Mihalos. Mihalos get away only from bein beaten thanks to his perfect sprint and the rapid intervention of the police, which dispersed the unionists with chemicals.
Drivers of trucks and tankers protest against the government's plan to liberalize the labor market in their respective industry. Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications approved and submitted to parliament a bill introducing the market principles in this industryas well. "Society is not to be blackmailed. If drivers start blockades and strikes, I would repeal the three-years transition period and will liberalize the market immediately," warned the Minister Dimitris Repas.
News about the strike of the drivers led many Athenians to go immediately to the petrol stations and to fill up the tanks of their cars. Arount the petrol stations there is an unusual for the holidays excitement, but with no miles long queues. Reporters investigation of GRReporter found that there is petrol and private cars refueling without a problem.
