In trembling anticipation are Greek movie fans, who will attend the awards of the Academy of cinema art. 168 directors, producers, writers, broadcasters, owners of cinema halls, editors, cameramen, actors and musicians, secretly voted for their favorites.
Competing for awards are 19 feature films, 13 documentaries and 22 shorts. So the time comes to announce the candidates this year, which Panos Koutras’ film "Strella" holds first nomination in 11 categories. Another favorite is "Deep soul" by Pantelis Voulgaris, whose film tells the story of the civil war in Greece and competes in nine categories. The shocking film "Dog tooth" by George Lantimos which toured festivals worldwide and will participate in 8 categories. The Greek audience already gave their vote for these three films by filling movie theatres during their screenings. However, there is a surprise - production “Guilt”, which will fight for a prize in the Feature film category, although absent from the other categories.
Awards will be given out in Megaro Mousikis by well-known Greek and foreign movie industry representatives and the ceremony will be hosted by actor George Kimoulis. The ceremony will be broadcast live on TV ΣΚΑΪ.
For the first time awards will be given out by the fresh founded Greek Film Academy. This year the awards have rather a pilot nature and yet they do not have their own name and will therefore be called the "Greek Academy Awards for film art”, but next year they will be baptized," said Academy President Tassos Boulmetis.
Awards will be given out to also Greek artists for lifetime contribution to the development of cinema. Prizes will not be cash but symbolic and they will be golden statues made in the famous studio Zolotas. As secretary of the academy said the procedure was quite simple: the members have voted twice - the first time to create catalogue of candidates from which five candidates for best picture were selected through e-voting and three other candidates in all categories. The second part of the vote will be held on May 2 and votes will be counted by a notary, who will transmit the results shortly before their announcement at the ceremony today. All awarded candidates can automatically become members of the Academy if they wish.
