All Greek-Americans will vote for the Democratic candidate Obama on the presidential elections in the US on November 4th. Respected members of the Greek-American lobby in America, who visited the “Konstantinos Karamanlis” foundation, assured of that. The editor in chief of The Washington Monthly Paul Glastris and the president of the publication Marcos Kounalakis stressed the big expectations of the Americans from Greek heritage and assured that they believe the new White House owner will be Barack Obama.
According to the two Washington analyzers and longtime Democratic figures, Barack Obama will revise George Bush’s decision to recognize the Republic of Macedonia and will pressure the government in Skopje to find a compromise with Athens. Paul Glastris is a longtime author of Bill Clinton’s speeches, he has written over 200 of them, including Clinton’s historical speech in “Intercontinental” hotel in Athens during 1999, where he apologized to the Greek people for the support, which the US gave to the colonels. Marcos Kounalakis is the husband of Eleni Kounalakis, president of the “Greek-Americans support Hillary Clinton” organization and right now president of “Greek-Americans support Barack Obama” organization.
The second expectation, which Greek-Americans have if for Barack Obama to cancel US visas for Greek citizens. As already known, Greece is the only country from the old members of the EU, whose citizens still need visas in order to visit the US. Athens believes it has fulfilled the two most important conditions for the visa cancellation – Greeks do not have illegal workers in the US anymore and the government intersected the channels, where Greek passports were “sold” to citizens of the former soviet republics. Despite that Bush’s administration did not cancel the visas for Greeks. According to Paul Glastris and Marcos Kounalakis this is the way Washington can revenge Athens for vetoing Macedonia’s acceptation in NATO.
Both Greek-Americans claim that the programs of New Democracy and the Democratic Party in the US coincide. The director of the foundation “Konstantinos Karamanlis,” professor Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos answered to this statement like this: “It is very hard to make parallels between political Parties in Europe and in America. New Democracy belongs to the family of the European National Party, which supports senator John McCane for president of the USA.”
