The direct negotiations in Nicosia for a solution of the Cyprian problem are going in the right direction, but still haven’t reached their most difficult stage, says in his report UN’s General secretary Ban Ki-mun. “I am certain that both leaders Dimitris Hristofias and Mehmed Ali Talat will continue their regular meetings and will continue their determination in finding a compromise,” said Ban Ki-mun. He stressed his position that the “the foundation for the solution of the problem is a dual-community federation.”
In his report he offered the members of the Council to approve the peace-maker forces to continue their presence in Cyprus for another 6 months. He estimates that the military situation on land is “stable and calm” and congratulated both sides for their decision to forbid military practices. He also added that the political atmosphere on the island has gotten better.
Meanwhile “Ethos” newspaper announced that the US Department of State created a special fund in the American embassy in Nicosia controlled by the US ambassador, which will deal with “sensitive political activities” in Cyprus. This is done through the Bi-Communal Support Program (BSP), which is harmless and connected to the education and professional development of young leaders. “Ethos” claims that the program is used as an instrument for enforcing US foreign policy.
This information was disclosed by a US document, which is characterized as “sensible” and is signed by the former US ambassador in Nicosia Michel Closson. The Greek publication believes that the document has been censored and that in its entirety it includes data about terrorist organizations in Greece and the holding of the Olympic Games in Athens, the “Macedonia” issue, the Anan plan and the threats against Cyprian politicians, the meetings of Greek and Cyprian ministers of foreign affairs with Colin Powel and Condoleezza Rice, as well as US agreements with Abdullah Gul regarding the Cyprian problem and the war in Iraq.
