Hillary Clinton’s nomination for Secretary of State in the US was welcomed euphorically in Athens. The Foreign ministry though does not expect a “revolution” neither in the Greek-American relations, nor in Washington’s position regarding the argument about the name of Macedonia or Turkey. Hillary being the head of the Department of State gives Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyanni the opportunity for personal contact because both ladies have personally met four times and it can be said that they have created a friendly relationship among each other. This is something, which could not have been said about Bakoyanni and Clinton’s predecessor in the Department of State Condoleezza Rice.
“Elefterios tipos” newspaper forecasts that Dora Bakoyanni will want a tête-à-tête meeting with the new US secretary of state right after her assumption of office on January 20th. According to the newspaper, Bakoyanni , in her capacity of chairwoman of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, will visit Washington during February. Let us remind you that before that the Greek Foreign Minister will visit Moscow. It is known that Dora Bakoyanni keeps excellent relations with Greek-Americans in the Democratic Party surroundings, who are sponsors of Bill Clinton. This is why during the primary elections in the Democratic Party, Greek diplomats bet entirely on Hillary Clinton and not Barack Obama.
After all, the Greek Foreign Ministry does not forget that US foreign policy is based on long term interests and not personal relationships. They remind us that Bill Clinton’s administration was not benevolent towards Greece when it came to the arguments with Macedonia or Turkey.
