Tension in the Aegean Sea

The tension between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea is increasing, where Greek and Turkish planes and ships are too close to each other and it won’t be a surprise if a new accident with victims happens soon. The General headquarters of both countries report the increasing tension from the middle of December until now. Yesterday, at least four Turkish Phantoms flew over Agatonisi Island near to the Dodecanese archipelago. Greek TV cameras showed two of the planes doing an amazing swoop, a hundred meters from the houses on the island.

This happens only a day after a fake signal for a ship with illegal immigrants, which sent a Greek rescue helicopter type Puma into border waters. A Turkish fighter plane “intercepted” the chopper so close that the air wave almost crashed it into the sea. This incident happened only one day after President Karolos Papoulias visited Agatonisi Island on Annunciation and from there made strong accusations against neighboring Turkey.

Of course, Turkey cannot leave that unnoticed. On the Turkish General Headquarters website one can find a whole list with Greek violations on Turkish territorial waters and air space – the first one on December 16th and the last one on January 6th. More precisely, they are blaming the Greek coastal guard as well as fishing ships that they go into Turkish waters around the famous Imia Island where Greece and Turkey almost got into war during 1996.
