Tractors block highways

Thousands of tractors and agricultural machineries blocked dozens of national roads in Greece and threatened to stay there until the government grants their demands. And in short, the demands are: higher selling prices and lower gas and spare parts prices.

The protests started in Tesalia, where the farmers started driving their tractors towards the Athens-Thessaloniki highway and ended up blocking it at two places last week. Agricultural machineries blocked the Tembi passage yesterday and another 400 tractors blocked the same highway at the 110th kilometer next to the Kastro exit in Viotia.

Very active are the protests in Northern Greece. At around 3:00pm yesterday, farmers blocked the Promahon-Kulata border line and are threatening to stay there at least for 3-4 days. Only pedestrians, ambulances, and special vehicles can pass through the border. Half an hour before that, the tobacco and tomato producers and the stock-breeders closed the Seres-Thessaloniki highway. Other farmers closed off the Ilinden-Eksohi border line and blocked the Drama and Kavala exits. For few hours yesterday, the farmers blocked the Thessaloniki-Nea Halkodona exit, the Yanitza exit in Pella region, and the Florina-Edesa and kozani-Ptolemida roads. The farmers are threatening to block all those points indefinitely until their demands are granted.

The situation on Crete Island is also dramatic. Yesterday, the protesters reached the departure runway at the international airport “Nikos Kazandzakis” in Iraklio. This led to the cancellation of 17 flights. The farmers stayed at the airport until late at night and they are threatening to do the same today. Their colleagues blocked the Hanya-Retimno and Retimno-Iraklio roads by splitting the island into two.
