Cyprus expects Obama to pressure Turkey to leave the Island

The president of Cyprus Dimitris Hristofias said that, Cyprus is hoping that the new US president Barack Obama will support the attempts to try and find a political solution, which will end the occupation. “You took a clear and strong position. Your speech about the sovereign equality of the different countries, your decisiveness to win over poverty, which is unjustly spread around the world, have impressed us and inspired us a lot,” says a letter by Hristofias. He reminds Obama that the Republic of Cyprus, which is a small island country – “and a victim of unjust aggression and is hoping to be supported by you in her attempts to find a political solution, which will put an end to the occupation on the island,” said in his letter Mr. Hristofias. The President of the Republic of Cyprus expressed his certainty that the newly elected president will lead such politics, which will be good for the American people as well as for the whole world.


In Cyprus 105 members of the Central Commission of the AKEL Party chose a new chief secretary. Andro Kirpianou – supporter of the Anan’s plan during 2004, won with 57 votes against his opponent Nikos Katzouridis, who got 48 votes. Five years ago, Katzouridis opposed the Anan’s plan. The former chief secretary of the Party Dimitris Hristofias left the position of chief secretary of the Party after he was elected for president of the Republic.
