The Greek and Iraqi authorities agreed on opening a direct flight between Athens and Baghdad. Associated Press reported that the agreement was signed late last night in the Iraqi capital. The flight will be operated by the Iraqi airlines and will be the first direct connection between the European Union and Baghdad. Right now there are few flights, which are connecting the EU with destinations with the Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Greek civil aviation and the Iraqi transportation ministry confirm the signed agreement. There is not set date for the first flight as well as how many times per week the planes will fly. The distance between Athens and Baghdad is 1939km (1205 miles or 1047 nautical miles). This is a theoretical air distance, which could change based on the position of the airport in both cities.
