“Jewels, worn by Maria Callas during different performances, are made of bronze, glass and belong to Swarovski,” says for Elefterios Tipos the president of Technopolis Fotis Ignatou.

Thirteen unique and handmade jewels, which Maria Callas has worn in different roles, are owned by Swarovski in Milan and they will be part of the exhibition in the new museum. The new museum is dedicated to the great opera diva and will open in two months in the cultural center Technopolis, by the Athens mayor Nikitas kaklamanis.

The negotiations with Swarovski had started about a month ago and today a representative of the company is coming to Greece. He will look around the exhibition hall and will give carte blanche for the transportation of the jewels, which will be displayed in the museum for five years.

The round building, which will host the museum in 380m is modernly furnished. Among the objects, which will be displayed are: “one leather chinchilla coat, the wig, which she wore in “Medea,” a personal photo album, gramophone records, and all publications about Callas, which have been on the market around the world, including in Japan. The objects are owned by individuals in Greece and abroad and some are bought by the municipality in a tender, which took place in Paris during 2000.”

The museum will also have a touch screen, on which the visitors will be able to track Callas’ life on and off stage in 1000 photos and texts. The opening of the new “Maria Callas” museum happened at the same time with the opening of the opera singers competition “Grand Prix Maria Callas 2009.” This year, 52 lyric performers are participating and the final round will take place on March 15th in Megaro Musikis. The prize is a gold medal together with ?9 000 and concerts in Greece and around the world, which will be organized by Athenaeum.
