A Center for Cultural Heritage studies left behind by Cyril and Methodius was opened in Thessaloniki. “Centers and Foundations, which hold the name of the Thessaloniki brothers, exists in different countries. The Foundation “Cyril and Methodius” in Sofia was the first one, which for many years publishes books, develops scientific researches, which protect the hypothesis that both brothers are Slavs,” says Professor Andonios-Emilios Tahiaos, who is a history and literature professor of the orthodox Slavic churches in the Thessaloniki Aristotle University of Theology.

Professor Tahiaos notes that the lack of such a center in Greece allows people to think that those great men were not of Greek heritage but Slavs, as Kathemerini newspapers says. This is why the center will cover a very urgent scientific and national need, because both brothers Cyril and Methodius are respected by all Europeans.

At the opening of the Center, the English Byzantium expert Judith Herin will talk about the acts of the Thessaloniki brother and about their contribution to the political developments in those days. The Center will work under the aegis of the municipality of Thessaloniki.

“The creation of the Slavic and Cyrillic alphabets, and of the translations of all Gospels and liturgies is a big progress, because until then, the only official Bible languages were the Hebrew, Greek and Latin,” says Prof. Herin for the Athenian News Agency.

“The creation of a Center for cultural heritage studies, left by Cyril and Methodius, in their own city is of great importance for the show of their work and their heritage,” adds the English Byzantium expert.
