When paying at the supermarket cashiers, consumers from Germany and France prefer to use the self-serve isle, in order to pay.

In Greece, the self checkout system took a little longer to appear. But now, when the new cashiers are installed, Greek consumers will use them because they believe they systems is quicker and does not make mistakes. Based on data by “Veropoulos” supermarket, which was the first one to introduce the system in its 6 stores in Athens, 10% of consumers take advantage of the service.

“The percentage is satisfying, if we keep in mind that this percentage abroad reaches 15%,” notes Yannis Statouros, managing counselor of Smartware, which introduced the checkout system in “Veropoulos.”

This system can be used only for purchases of ten products. Basically, it is an express cashier, which can work all the time. “Veropoulos” plans to introduce it in all of its 50 stores around Greece.

The automat can be used very easy – the client pushes the “start” button, scans all the products and after that pushes the “done” button. The machines give the opportunity to pay with a credit card or cash and it gives back change.

The possibilities to “lie” to the machine are very limited, because the products are measured before they are scanned and there is also a camera. When the bill is paid, there is a little door, which allows the client to leave. This system takes a big load off the regular cashiers and the supermarkets are happy to offer it.
