The new Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Derviş Eroğlu, whose party for national unity won the elections, will wait for the decision of the UK Supreme Court, regarding the Apostolidis vs. Orams case, before deciding whether to continue the unification negotiations of the island. In a long interview for the Cyprian newspaper “Simerini,” the Turkish Cypriots announced that the unification of the island needs to be solved on the negotiations table and not in a court room.

As grreporter.info already informed you, the UK Supreme Court turned to the European Court in Luxemburg, regarding the case of Meletis Apostolidis against the British Orams family, which purchased a property in North Cyprus that belonged to Apostolidis. The European Court decreed that the British have to pay compensation to Apostolidis and if they do not do it, he can confiscate some of their properties in Britain. Political experts on the Cyprian problem commented that the decision of the European Court can have extremely negative consequences for the negotiations process, because it can motivate thousands of Greek Cypriots to repeat Meletis Apostolidis’ appeal.

“Property sale in Northern Cyprus cannot stop, life goes on and no one can say when the Cyprian problem will be solved,” said in the interview Derviş Eroğlu. He stressed that both sides of Cyprus use the supreme power of their territory but people will have to have equal power rights in the future united country. “This country cannot be a continuation of the current Republic of Cyprus, as the Greek Cypriots want it,” claims the Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister. He is against the statement of the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis that the European Union is a guarantee for the solution of the Cyprian problem.

“Turkey will play a significant role in the solution of the Cyprian problem and especially during the second part of the negotiations when some of the most important topics will be discussed,” said the US ambassador in Nicosia Frank Urbancic. During the weekend, he gave an interview for 6 Cyprian newspapers, in which he stressed that inevitably, Turkey has to be present at the negotiations table at the final part of the negotiations, but not now. “In order to unify the island, many painful compromises are needed, which will leave both sides unsatisfied,” said also Frank Urbancic. To the question whether the unification of Cyprus needs a guarantee from outside the EU, the diplomat answered: “This is not our decision. The US is not a EU member.”
