Four major Greek newspapers did a survey on the public opinion on the EU Parliament elections in June. According to the Public Issue’s results in “Katimerini”, the largest margin between the two major parties is 5,5%;there PASOK reached 26,5%, New Democracy- 21,0% and the third place is for the Ecologists with 6,5%.

In the VPRC survey for “Sunday Elevterotipia” PASOK has the lead with 4,7%, having 37% of the voters on its side, while New Democracy has 32,5%. In this survey the ecologists are far at the sixth position with 5% of the election votes.

In “Proto Thema”, ALCO’s survey shows that the difference is of 4,2%, with PASOK having 29,9% of the prospective votes and New Democracy- 25,7%. At the same time, in “Paron” newspaper the margin between the two rival parties is only 2,8%.

Unlike before, ALCO’s survey now shows a perspective of announcing National Assembly elections, in case PASOK receives superiority with more than 3 units at the EU Parliament elections. Asked if elections for new parliament should take place in Greece, 43,5% say, that the solution of the problems the country is experiencing, indeed lies in pre-term elections, while 45,9% still believe that elections should not take place. Meanwhile, 77,8% declare their intention to vote on June 7, and 14,7% willingly share there are not going to participate in the election campaign.

The two major party leaders- Kostas Karamanlis and Georgios Papandreou, announced their lists of candidates for the European Parliament. Kostas Karamanlis chose Marieta Ianaku to assume the leader position. With this decision Karamanlis aims to attract the disappointed electors, place his bets on the extreme right positions and lower the margin with PASOK. Relying on the vast experience of Marieta Ianaku on the European matters, Karamanlis decided to also demonstrate the European side of the party. According to the prime-minister’s words, the governing New Democracy unites people that “cover a major social group and comprise a strong team which knows how to handle difficult issues.”

On the other hand, Georgios Papandreou would like to use the EU Parliament elections’ vote in proving that PASOK’s returning in government is approaching. The opposing leader has put on the top of his list two new names- Georgios Papakonstantinou and Silvana Rapti, without, however, destroying the party balance. “On June 7, we vote for Europe. We decide about Greece. We decide to change the direction that will bring our country salvation at the next parliament elections, whenever they take place”, stated PASOK’s leader in Patra, after the names of the EU Parliament elections candidates were revealed.
