Hillary Clinton confirmed her participation in the unofficial ministry council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which will take place on the Greek island Corfu.
The US Secretary of State announced her decision during a discussion of the international affairs budget. The two day meeting in Greece will take place on 27th and 28th of June and the discussions will include the European architecture and security, because last year this topic was proposed by the Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
As Hillary Clinton explained, her participation will be because of the decision, which was taken by Obama’s administration, to support international organizations, which will play an important role in the future, like OSCE, in which both the US and Russia are participating.
Based on preliminary information, the Russian Foreign Affairs minister Sergey Lavrov will probably participate also. Most of the EU countries have already showed interest in participating and some of them have even answered positively to the invitation of the Greek OSCE chairmanship.
The US diplomacy leader noted that the meeting on Corfu will give her the chance to discuss Europe’s security and to hear different points of view. She also explained that “Estonia’s representative will have a different opinion than a representative from Russia, Greece or Portugal and all of us need to be able to discuss openly whatever is bothering us. This is why I believe that the OSCE meeting is the right place and I am confirming my participation.”
The meeting on Corfu could play crucial role for improving the situation in South Ossetia and warming the relationship between Russia and Georgia, was Hillary Clinton’s answer to a question by the Democratic Senator Benjamin Cardin.
