In a boring and quite long TV debate, aired during the prime time on all Greek TV stations, representatives of the 5 parliament parties presented their political views in front of the upcoming vote for the European parliament. A research by Kapa Research, done over the phone right after the end of the debate showed that the biggest approval of 36.4% received the Prime Minister and leader of the managing New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis. After him, on second place with 27.7% ranked the leader of the oppositional socialist party PASOK Georgios Papandreou. Surprisingly, on third place is the leader of the far right LAOS Georgios Karadzeferis with an approval of 7.7%. Fourth place is taken by the leader of the Greek communist party Aleka Papariga, which got 7.1% and with the least approval is the leader of the Radical Coalition Alekos Alavanos.
11.2% of the questioned answered that they do not support any of the five leaders.
The debate was hosted by the evening news anchor of the Greek national TV NET Maria Houkli and the questions asked were by journalists from the biggest Greek private and public channels. The questions were grouped in 6 categories – European and foreign policy, Economics and development, Social politics and employment, Education, Environment and Governmental administration. The regulations of the debate did not allow a direct confrontation between the candidates and in practice there was no debate. What ended up happening were different interviews with the politicians, which quickly became boring to the already small public, which wanted to hear something new that would be offered by the leaders 10 days before the Euro-parliament elections.
